Sew a plaid square to a background square. Make four. They measure 2 1/2″ by 4 1/2″. Press to the plaid.
Add the 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle to the left side of the two patch. Make four. They measure 4 1/2″ square. Press to the rectangle.
Sew the 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle to two opposite sides of the red 2 1/2″ square. Make four. (OOPS! I almost forgot to take a picture of this step, so you I only have three pictured) Press to the square. They will measure 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.
I really did make four. Sew the 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles to the top and bottom of the red unit. Press to the rectangle. The unit will measure 4 12″ square.
Sew into rows and then into the finished block. The block measures 12 1/2″ square and will finish at 12″ in a quilt.
Possible layouts. I really like the floating block look of the second layout.
