After deciding to do an acorn block for October, I have seen acorns everywhere!

Cutting Instructions:

White Background Fabric:

2 ~ 2 1/2 ” x 5 1/2″ Rectangles

2 ~ 2 1/2″ Squared

2 ~ 3″ Squares

2 ~ 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ Rectangle

Gold Fabric:

1 ~ 2 1/2″ Square

1 ~ 2 1/2″ x 11″ Rectangle  (if doing scrappy you need 4 ~ 2 1/2″ squares)

Brown Fabric:

1 ~ 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ Rectangle

1 ~ 2 1/2″ x 11″  Rectangle (if doing scrappy you need 3 ~ 2 1/2″ squares)

1 ~ 3″ Square

Orange Fabric:

1 ~ 2 1/2″ x 11″  Rectangle (if doing scrappy you need 3 ~ 2 1/2″ squares)

1 ~ 3″ Square

Green Fabric:

1 ~ 2 1/2″ x 11″ Rectangle  (if doing scrappy you need 4 ~ 2 1/2″ squares)

Sewing Instructions:

Sew a 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ background rectangle to both sides of the Orange 2 1/2: square. This is the stem unit.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the 2 ~ 2 1/2″ squares.  Place one square on the end of the 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ brown rectangle.  Sew on the line, trim 1/4″ away from the line, and press to the background fabric.  Repeat this process on the other end of the brown rectangle.  Pay attention to the angle. This is the acorn cap unit.

If you are using strips. Decide on your colors, and make a strip set of four colors.  Sew the strip set into a tube.  Cut into 2 1/2″ Widths.  Now you can open a seam between colors to get your three rows of squares.

You need a set of two squares for the bottom row.  The bottom row also need two Half Square Triangles for the corners.  They can be the same color or different colors.  Using the 3″ squares draw a diagonal line, stitch 1/4″ away from the line on each side.  Cut apart on the line. Press.  If you are using two different colors with this method you will have extra half square triangles.  (if you need more help you can check this post out)

If you are using 2 1/2″ scrappy squares, you need 14 squares, arrange how you like and sew them together into rows.

Lay out your rows, sew them together, add the bottom row.  This unit will measure 8 1/2″ square.

To assemble the block, add a 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ background rectangle on each side of the 8 1/2″ square.  Next add the acorn cap, and lastly add the stem strip on top.  The block will measure 12 1/2″ square.

I think this would make a really cute scrappy table runner.
