This is a fun heart block to make.  There are many ways to make half square triangles.  Today I’m giving instructions using the Essential Triangle Tool.  If you are making your half square triangles using a different method you will need to adjust your fabric requirements.

Cutting Instructions:

White Background Fabric:
Cut 1 ~ 3 1/2″ x 42″

Black Fabric with Red Hearts:
Cut 2 ~ 3 1/3″ Squares
Cut 1 ~ 3 1/2″ x 6″ Strip

Black Fabric with White Writing:
Cut 1 ~ 3 1/2″ x 12″ Strip

Red Fabric:
Cut 1 ~ 3 1/2″ x 12″ strip

White Fabric with Ladybugs:
Cut 1 ~ 3 1/2″ x 12″ Strip

To make half square triangles (HST) using the Essential Triangle Tool, use a colored fabric and a white fabric strip right sides together.  Starting on the left side of the strip, lay the ruler on your strip set, as pictured.  Cut on the angle.  Rotate the ruler and cut the other angle.  Continue across the strip set to cut as many sets as you need. Take note that you will end up with one pointed end and one blunt end one each cutting.

Take the first of HST to the sewing machine and chain piece them with the blunt end going in first.

I learned a new way to trim my HST using the Simple Folded Corners Ruler.  You place the seam line on the the size of finished HST and trim the two sides.  It cut my trimming time in half.  YEAH!  If you don’t have this ruler that’s ok.  Press to the dark and trim to 3 1/2″ square.

Play with the layout of the HST until you like how your heart looks.  Sew into rows, then sew the rows together.
